Patrick Eggle Guitars was founded in the early '90s, and garnered acclaim for models such as the Berlin. After a stint in the US hand-making acoustic and archtop guitars, Eggle returned to the UK to produce acoustic instruments for the likes of Jake Bugg & Frank Turner. He has subsequently been involved with brands such as Faith and Shergold, with his Faith guitars earning several 'Guitar of the Year' awards. Taking many design cues from PRS' Custom 24, the Vienna Plus features a set-neck construction comprising a Mahogany body with Quilted Maple top, Mahogany neck and 24 fret Ebony fingerboard. Chrome hardware is fitted including a StopBar-style tailpiece, adjustable saddle-style bridge and sealed Sperzel tuning machines. A pair of Patrick Eggle Guitars matched Vienna humbucking pickups are installed, and are wired to a 5-way blade switch, master volume and master tone controls. The Mahogany neck plays very well, with a profile which might be described as a slim 'C' shape, which offers comfortable playability and easy reach across the register. The gloss finish to the rear assists with smooth navigation of the 25" scale, whilst the generous double cutaway body design ensures that access to the upper frets is unrestricted. The Ebony of the fingerboard is luxurious under the fingers, and with its 10" radius is practical for a wide range of styles and techniques. The controls are well set out; well within reach when playing without being intrusive, and along with feeling well balanced on a strap, the Vienna plus is an instrument which is comfortable and practical in any position. The pair of Patrick Eggle matched Vienna humbucking pickups in this guitar deliver a powerful yet vintage-voiced tone, making them suitable for many different genres and playing styles. The neck position is round and warm, whilst providing plenty of grunt to push those solo sounds to the front of the mix. The bridge position is of course brighter, and can handle plenty of gain for a saturated rock rhythm sound. The 5-way switching also provides some extra tonal options over a typical twin humbucker instrument, with inner parallel single coils in position 2 and outer parallel single coils in position 4. A unique and quite rare instrument with outstanding pedigree, which at 31 years old is gently accruing its own vintage vibe. The bass side front edge demonstrates a light indentation which pierces the finish. Very light scratching to the front face is visible under direct light, as is common with high gloss finishes. Neck: Overall excellent condition. Very light scratching to the fingerboard is consistent across the register. These markings are not felt under the fingers and do not impact the playability of the instrument. It is difficult to discern any other markings to the neck and fingerboard. Body: Overall very good condition. The front face demonstrates a small indentation which cracks the finish slightly at the bass side of the lower bout. A light scuff mark is present at the treble side front edge of the lower bout. To the rear at the bass side lower bout a mild chip is present. Very light scratching to all aspects of the body is visible under direct lighting, as is common with high gloss finishes. The colour of the body has faded over time, and now resembles more of a grey than purple as it originally was. This is consistent and not noticeable without knowing the original finish of the guitar. Condition of Frets: This instrument has had a fret level and re-crown in house to ensure the best playability. There is moderate material remaining for any light fret work the new owner may wish to perform. Current Set Up: Truss Rod: Fully functional. Truss rod tool (4mm hex) included.
