Shaftesbury LP Special Walnut c.1970s Vintage Electric

This guitar is a commission sale. If you have a high end guitar or other musical equipment you are interested in selling, please contact us. Here for sale we have a Shaftesbury LP Special vintage electric guitar in a Walnut finish. Shaftesbury Guitars were an in-house brand for Rose-Morris; a British music retailer/distributor which has been present on London's Denmark Street for over 100 years. In the late '60s and throughout the '70s, Shaftesbury instruments were produced in a variety of locations around the world, some at the Matsumoku plant in Japan, some at the Eko factory in Italy and some in the UK by Peter Cook/Shergold. Rose-Morris were main dealers for high-end brands like Rickenbacker and Ovation at the time, and the Shaftesbury line of instruments fell into the mid-range category with copies of expensive American-made instruments. This particular example is a copy of a Les Paul Special, and features a set-neck construction comprising a Mahogany body in a 'pancake' style, sandwiching a thin strip of what is likely Maple between two slabs of Mahogany. The Mahogany neck is topped with a 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard, with white binding to both sides. Chrome hardware is fitted including a wraptail bridge and sealed tuning machines. A pair of P-90 pickups are installed, and are wired to a 3-way toggle switch and independent volume & tone controls. The Mahogany neck plays well, with a profile which might be described as a fairly slim 'D' shape, with a slightly flattened area to the centre. This promotes ergonomic thumb positioning across the register, and offers both comfort and practicality for speedy playing. The Rosewood of the fingerboard is pleasant under the fingers, whilst the radius which we have measured to 9.5" is practical for string bending and vibrato techniques despite its unconventionality for an instrument of this style. The instrument is nicely balanced in both standing and seated playing positions, and at 8.25lbs retains enough weight to feel substantial without being too heavy or hard on the shoulders. Amplified, the pair of P-90 pickups installed in this guitar deliver a thick, raw tone just as we expect from P-90s. There is an impressive output from both pickups, with the neck producing a beautiful crunch tone which adds a vintage warmth to your lead and solo lines. The bridge is brighter, working perfectly for rock and blues rhythm parts and easily pushing your amp into a saturated distortion tone. The traditional control layout is as comprehensive and practical as ever, and responds well to small changes for easy tweaks while playing. A seriously cool instrument with genuine vintage-vibe at a wallet-friendly price. Luthier Report Our ID: 128032589255 Weight: 8.25lbs Serial: N/A Aesthetic Condition: Headstock: Overall good condition. All aspects of the headstock display moderate indentation, causing delamination of the finish in places. In some cases this delamination has worsened over time and exposed the wood. This is most notable to the top edge. Light inconsistent delamination markings are present around the logo to the front face. Light to mild scratching is present to all aspects of the headstock. Neck: Overall good condition. A finish crack to the rear is present behind the 1st fret. This does not flex under pressure and therefore presents no structural concern. The binding on the bass side of the neck has been slightly bevelled by a previous owner, more notable above the 18th fret. Light indentation to the fingerboard can be seen under the 6th E from the 8th fret upwards. Light indentations and scratching to the rear of the neck are present throughout the register. These can slightly be felt in the playing position but do not impact the overall playability of the instrument. Body: Overall good condition. Mild to moderate chipping to all aspects of the body exposes the wood in places, most notably at the front tip of the cutaway. Moderate delamination of the finish can be seen around the neck joint, most notably at either side of the fingerboard extension. Here, the treble side shows a finish crack which has been tested and presents no structural concern. All aspects of the body display light to mild scratching which can be seen under direct light, the most noticeable of these can be seen to the rear face near the selector switch cavity. The scratchplate displays mild scratching consistent with regular past use. Condition of Frets: The frets demonstrate notable signs of use, with light denting in the early register and notable flattening throughout. There is no material remaining for future fret work. Current Set Up: Truss Rod: The truss rod has no further room for adjustments. This means that relief can be added, but not taken out. Hardware: Overall good condition. The treble side of the bridge cannot be lowered any further. A previous owner has filed ‘string guides’ into the bridge. The pickup covers display notable chipping of the paint which exposes the metal casings. Structural: No concerns or issues to note. Height of the string from the 12th Fret-2mm - Bass 2.25mm Please be aware that the action on a guitar may move slightly in transit and this measurement is the current height. Strings on Guitar - 10-46 This guitar demonstrates notable fret noise which is apparent when amplified. This noise does not affect the sustain or bending of notes. The new owner may choose to raise the action to alleviate this. Electrics: Fully functional. The neck pickup height cannot be adjusted due to the shallow depth of the cavity. A previous owner has applied copper shielding to all of the electrical cavities. Case & Accessories Unbranded hard case. Fully functional with moderate signs of wear including stickers to the exterior, tearing of the tolex and wear of the interior. Truss rod tool not included.
