Hagstrom P46 Deluxe Red Sparkle c.1958-59 Vintage Electric

This guitar is a commission sale. If you have a high end guitar you are interested in selling, please contact us. Here for sale we have an incredibly rare and historic Hagstrom P46 Deluxe electric guitar in Red Sparkle finish. Hagstrom is a Swedish musical instrument manufacturer founded in 1925, originally producing accordions. In 1958 the company began manufacturing electric guitars, pioneering the production of electric guitars outside of the US. In 1983 the company closed its doors after being priced out of the market by cheaper brands being made in Asia. Hagstrom were reluctant to cheapen the brand with poor quality instruments, and decided to close down. In 2004 the brand was revived, producing updated versions of Hagstrom's original Swedish designs. The serial number and specification of this instrument indicate its manufacture in 1958-'59. The first three digits of the serial number show the production run, which for this instrument is 449. This is the first known production run of Hagstrom guitars, starting in 1958 and running into 1959. Brochures and catalogues from the time show the specifications of the instrument, although the construction materials are listed as 'Best Seasoned Wood' for the body and 'Highly Rigid, reinforced by special Swedish alloy bar' for the neck. The weight of the instrument and areas of the wood which can be seen in small patches of finish damage suggest that Mahogany has been used. The fingerboard is particularly striking, and is made from 'Mother of Pearl Plastic' - a material we would likely refer to as pearloid today. Chrome hardware is fitted, including the original Hagstrom fixed tailpiece, likely non-original TOM style bridge and original Hagstrom sealed tuning machines with translucent buttons. An exceptionally unique pickup and switching system is installed, called the Hagstrom 'Hi Fi Pickup Chassis'. This comprises four single coil pickups arranged into two pairs, and features push-button controls that produce a wide array of tones without the need for tweaking of the volume/tone controls as would be required with other more conventional designs. Six buttons are featured, with 'Solo' designed for a thick solo tone, 'Acc' for a softer accompaniment tone, 'LH' for both pairs of pickups together, 'L' for the neck pickup pair, 'H' for the bridge pickup pair and 'O' for turning the pickups off. Volume & tone control wheels are also featured, as well as a third wheel which regulates the effect of the selected tne button. The neck is rather thick, with a profile which could be described as a sizeable 'D' shape. There is a quite notable flat section to the centre rear which encourages ergonomic thumb positioning for a wide range of playing styles and techniques whilst certainly retaining the character of a late '50s instrument. The 'pearloid' fingerboard provides a smooth and durable playing surface across the register. We have measured the radius to around 14", which proves to be a nice balance between comfortable chord playing and practical lead playing. The tone of the Hagstrom P46 Deluxe is both versatile and unique. There is plenty of 'grunt' on offer as the pickups are in a humbucking configuration. The 'Solo' button certainly provides a powerful output which will work brilliantly for lead lines and solos. The 'Acc' button delivers a much smoother and softer sound, perfect for chordal strumming and blending into the mix. The advantage of this system is that rather than using a 5-way switch to select the pickup and then dialling in your tone with volume and tone controls, the buttons allow you to instantly switch between a range of sounds without the need for dialling any controls. This is an incredibly unique vintage instrument which has an important place in the historical development of the electric guitar as a concept and product. Verification report

Luthier Report Our ID: 1240725119850 Weight: 9.9lbs Serial: 449275 Aesthetic Condition: Headstock: Overall fair condition. The plastic veneer is peeling in several places revealing the wood beneath. Half of the headstock logo has come away over time and is not included. The front face of the headstock demonstrates notable discoloration toward the nut. The edges and top side demonstrate consistent indentation and chipping of the finish to the veneer. The top rear edge shows a notable chip which exposes the wood. All aspects of the headstock show light to moderate scratching. Neck: Overall good condition. The rear of the neck demonstrates discoloration, scratching and light indentation throughout the register. This can be slightly felt under the thumb in the playing position but does not impact the overall playability of the instrument. The fingerboard demonstrates scratching throughout the register, running horizontally likely due to amateur fret work. There is a small gap at the heel to the body, this does not flex or move under tension. The seam between the fingerboard and the neck can be felt under the thumb when sliding up and down the neck, moreso on the fingerboard extension. Body: Overall good condition. The front face demonstrates discoloration of the finish, causing cloudiness in some areas. The lower bout is glossier than the surrounding finish. Some areas demonstrate a rough texture, whilst others are smooth. The ‘Hagstrom’ logo is missing from the bass side shoulder of the front face, with a faint outline ‘shadow’ visible where it originally was. The binding tape is coming away in several places, most notably to the bass side shoulder. The sides and rear of the body demonstrate consistent scratching, indentation and discoloration of the finish. Condition of Frets: The frets demonstrate moderate signs of use, with some evidence of recent fretwork performed to an amateur standard. This results in slight buzzing on the treble strings in the middle to upper register. Frets 1 & 3 have been replaced at some stage with fretwire which does not match the other frets, however the material has been levelled for acceptable playability. Current Set Up: Truss Rod: N/A Hardware: Fully functional demonstrating poor condition. Several of the tuning shafts are bent, however do hold pitch. The bridge and saddle demonstrate less wear, remaining fully functional. The bridge is bottomed out, and no further downwards adjustment to the action can be made. Structural: No concerns or issues to note. Height of the string from the 12th Fret-1.75mm - Bass 2.5mm Please be aware that the action on a guitar may move slightly in transit and this measurement is the current height. Strings on Guitar - 10-46 Electrics: Fully functional. Case & Accessories: No case is provided with this guitar. This guitar is a commission sale.
