Burns John Rostill 1964 Shadows Bass 2006 White
Here for sale we have a Burns Shadows Bass 'The Legend' in White finish. Made in China in 2006, this bass is inspired by the instrument played by John Rostill of The Shadows from 1964, having initially been designed to match the iconic guitar played by Hank Marvin. The bass John Rostill played was slightly different to the production models, with ‘Marvin’ on the headstock and the pickups being set straight and not at an angle, faithfully imitated by this reissue. This bass was limited to 500 units, with this particular example being an early example of this run of the reissue with the serial number 0002! This bass features a bolt-on construction comprising an Alder body, Hard Maple neck and 22 fret bound Rosewood fingerboard. Chrome hardware is fitted, including a Burns Rez-o-Tube string-through-body bridge and Burns Vintage Style Reversed Gear Machine Heads. In typical Burns style, the body is extensively covered with a multi-plate Tortoiseshell pickguard, which is loaded with a trio of Burns Nu-Sonic single-coil pickups. These are wired to a 5-way blade switch, master volume neck/middle tone and bridge tone controls. A push/pull feature is included on the bridge tone control which adds two new pickup configurations- neck and bridge in positions 1 & 5 and all three pickups in position 3. The Hard Maple neck plays very well, with a profile which might be described as a Soft 'V', which progresses smoothly to a 'C' shape in the upper register. This works well for anchored rhythm playing in the lower frets and smooth melodic lines in the upper register. The Rosewood of the fretboard is pleasant under the fingers, providing a smooth and durable playing surface. The generous dual cutaways enhance access to the top frets, whilst the gloss finish to the rear of the neck ensures fluid navigation of the 33.5" scale. The tone of the Burns John Rostill Shadows bass is deep and warm without being too soft; certainly a distinctive sound which will match the unique aesthetics of the instrument. The warmth of the neck pickup is contracted nicely by the brightness of the bridge, which when engaging the push/pull pot blend together very nicely for a full and rich tone that will fill out the mix nicely whilst still capturing the attack of your playing. The controls are quite extensive without being too complicated, and offer a versatile range of sounds which work well in a wide range of musical settings. A typically interesting instrument from Burns with a unique retro vibe.
