Here for sale we have an ESP LTD 30th Anniversary KH-3 electric guitar in Black with Spider Graphic finish. In 1991, Kirk Hammett approached ESP to ask for a new single-cutaway guitar which retained the features of his KH-2. He used that guitar touring the Black Album throughout the '90s, before spending a number of years on display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The original was returned to ESP so it could be referenced for this 30th Anniversary edition. Made in Korea in 2022, this instrument features a neck-thru-body construction comprising an Alder body, 3pc Maple neck and 24 fret Macassar Ebony fingerboard, scalloped from frets 17-24. Black hardware is fitted including a Floyd Rose 1000 series double-locking tremolo system and Grover Rotomatic tuning machines. A pair of signature Kirk Hammett EMG Bone Breaker active humbucking pickups are installed, and are wired to a 3-way toggle switch, independent volume controls and a master tone. The 3pc Maple neck plays exceptionally well, with the Extra Thin 'U' profile offering a lightning fast and precise playing experience across the register. Whilst certainly on the slimmer side, the profile manages to avoid feeling too thin or characterless as can often be the case with shred-focussed instruments. The gloss finish to the rear works in conjunction with the neck-thru construction to ensure easy navigation of the fingerboard and unrestricted access to the upper register. The radius is nicely flat at 13.78”, and along with the XJ frets and scalloping of the upper register delivers a razor sharp and precise playing experience in all fingerboard positions. The pair of Kirk Hammett signature EMG ‘Bone Breaker’ active humbucking pickups deliver thick and full-bodied tones, with plenty of clarity and definition even with high gain settings. The bridge pickup uses a ceramic magnet for more aggressive rhythm sounds, whilst the neck features Alnico 5 magnets for a smoother and rounder sound. Heavy distortion sounds are of course easy to achieve with these pickups, but the clean sounds are what’s most impressive; crystalline and bell-like, the tone is bright and shimmering without sounding brittle- not something that can often be said for active humbuckers. Perfect for the Metallica super fan or the guitarist looking for a Kirk Hammett-inspired sound.
