Gibson Custom 50th Anniversary '60 Les Paul Standard V. III

This item is a commission sale. If you have a high-end guitar or bass you’re interested in selling, please contact us. Here for sale we have an incredibly special Gibson Custom Shop 50th Anniversary '60 Les Paul Standard Reissue, Version III. Handcrafted in the Gibson Custom Shop in 2010, this guitar is part of a limited run of just 500 instruments released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1960 Les Paul Standard. The Les Paul Standard was initially released in 1958, and was the first major redesign of the Les Paul since its introduction in 1952. The new Standard retained all of the hardware improvements and PAF pickups that had gradually made their way onto the spec sheet of the '57 Goldtop, but came in a new transparent Cherry Sunburst finish which exposed the figured maple top. Gibson targeted the instrument towards older jazz players, limiting the popularity of the new model and missing out on the developing market of young guitarists who would shortly go on to dominate the music scene. Only around 1700 of the instruments were ever made, and by 1962 the Les Paul Standard had been discontinued in favour of the new Les Paul design, which we know today as the SG. Today, an estimated 900 instruments are thought to remain in existence, and easily command 6-figure price tags. This reissue was handcrafted in the Gibson Custom Shop to match the specification of the original as closely as possible. Three versions were released to reflect the differing neck profiles that the vintage instruments left the factory with. Version III features the slimmest profile of them all, contrasting with Version I's Rounded '59 profile. Of course, a set neck construction is employed, and comprises a Mahogany body with a carved Figured Maple top, Mahogany neck and 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard inlaid with Mother of Pearl trapezoids. Nickel hardware is fitted including an ABR-1 style TOM bridge and StopBar tailpiece, along with a set of Gibson Deluxe tuning machines with 'Tulip' style buttons. A pair of Gibson Burstbucker pickups are installed, with a BB1 in the neck position and a BB2 in the bridge. These are wired to the traditional 3-way toggle and independent volume & tone controls. The Mahogany neck plays beautifully. The '60s Slim profile is supremely comfortable in the hand, promoting ergonomic thumb positioning across the register. Whilst it is correctly described as a 'Slim' profile, it has to be said that it retains plenty of the unmistakable Les Paul character that we know and love. There is enough girth to the neck to inspire confidence when chord playing and riffing, yet lead lines and solos do not feel cumbersome as some players may find with thicker neck profiles. The Rosewood of the fretboard is luxurious under the fingers, and with the traditional 12" radius is practical for a wide range of playing styles and techniques. For a Les Paul, the weight of this particular instrument is on the lower side at 8.15lbs. This means that longer playing sessions are pain & fatigue free. Amplified, the pair of Gibson Burstbucker 1 & 2 humbuckers installed in this instrument deliver vintage-accurate sweet, rich and warm tones, perfect for those searching for the ultimate vintage sound. The Burstbucker series are Gibson's modern recreation of the PAF pickup, and make use of Alnico II magnets, 2 conductor wire and no wax potting, following the specification of the originals as closely as is reasonably possible. The BB1 in the neck is warm and round, and provides an impeccable lead tone for solos and melodic lines. The BB2 in the bridge is hotter, saturating into an incredibly rich distortion when driving your amp. Clean tones are crystalline yet warm, and with the traditional control layout an impressive range of tones can be achieved without even touching a pedal. An incredibly well-kept example of a highly limited Custom Shop instrument, equal parts exquisite instrument & investment piece.
