Gibson Q200 Alpine White 1985 Vintage Electric Guitar
This item is a commission sale. If you have a high-end guitar or bass you’re interested in selling, please contact us. Here for sale we have a Gibson Q200 electric guitar in Alpine White finish. Made in the USA in 1985, this guitar was part of Gibson's short lived Q series of instruments, which were released in 1985 in order to compete with the Super Strat models from other manufacturers such as Jackson & Kramer which were in vogue at the time. The Q Series instruments were designed by Wayne Charvel during his time at the Gibson Custom Shop after he sold his brand to Grover Jackson. The Q200 was the second instrument in the line after the Q100, which featured just one pickup and a TOM bridge. The Q200 was renamed the Q2000 towards the end of 1985, before being discontinued in 1986. A major departure for Gibson at the time, this instrument features a set-neck construction comprising an offset double cutaway Mahogany body, Mahogany neck & 22 fret Ebony fingerboard. Chrome hardware is fitted including a Kahler Flyer double-locking tremolo system and sealed Grover tuning machines. A pair of Gibson pickups are installed, with a Dirty Fingers humbucker in the bridge and single-coil in the neck. These are wired to a 3-way toggle switch, independent volumes & master tone controls as well as a bridge position coil-split mini toggle. The Mahogany neck is comfortable in the hand, playing nice and fast thanks to the Medium 'D' profile. Certainly slimmer and more lead-focussed than a typical Gibson neck, this instrument feels fast and easily manouvrable, with generous cutaways and a slim neck heel that provides unrestricted access to the upper frets. Keeping some of Gibson's most traditional specifications such as the 24.75" scale length and 12" fingerboard radius is a nice touch which helps to retain Gibson's character and feel whilst updating the playability for the '80s era. Amplified, the pair of Gibson pickups installed in the instrument deliver thick, full-bodied tones well suited to the heavy riffing and shredding lead lines the guitar was designed for. The Dirty Fingers humbucker in the bridge delivers a searing high output which easily pushes your amp into a saturated distortion tone. This is perfect for riffs, power chords & rhythm playing. The single-coil in the neck position is of course rounder, working nicely for clean sounds and smooth melodis lines. The addition of the mini-toggle coil split allows you to match the two pickups together in the middle position for a crystalline and accurate clean sound. A seriously rare instrument from a unique moment in Gibson's history. Luthier Report Our ID: 1220525101640 Weight: 6.7lbs Serial: 82415552 Aesthetic Condition: Headstock: Overall very good condition. A mild indentation is present to the rear tip of the headstock, breaking through the finish and exposing the wood. A small chip to the finish is present to the treble side of the nut, lightly exposing the wood. Some light scuff marks can be seen to the treble side edge. Glue residue is present to the front face near the bass side of the truss rod cover. All aspects of the headstock display mild to moderate nitro-checking, as can be expected with a nitro-finished instrument of this age. The white finish to the rear and edges has yellowed with age somewhat inconsistently, with sections appearing slightly whiter than others. Neck: Overall very good condition. A mild indentation is present to the centre rear of the neck at the 5th fret, this has lightly pierced the finish and can be felt in the playing position. Light to mild checking of the lacquer can be seen to the rear of the neck by the early register and near the heel, this is common with nitrocellulose lacquer with a guitar this age. The fingerboard shows light indentation or pitting in the early register consistent with playwear, most notably at the 1st fret treble side. The white finish to the rear of the neck has yellowed with age rather inconsistently, with some sections appearing whiter than others. Body: Overall very good condition. A previous owner has glued two backstage passes to the front face lower bout of the instrument. It is likely that removal of these would damage the finish beneath. Light to mild chipping which in places exposes the wood is scattered inconsistently around the front and rear edges of the lower bout. The bottom edge shows notable paint transfer or scuff markings. All aspects of the body display moderate to notable nitro-checking, as can be expected of a nitro-finished instrument of this age. The white finish has yellowed with age somewhat inconsistently, leaving some areas whiter than others. Condition of Frets: The frets demonstrate moderate signs of use, not affecting playability. Moderate flattening of the frets is apparent throughout the register. There is no material remaining for any fret work the new owner may wish to perform. Current Set Up: Truss Rod: Fully functional & adjustable. No truss rod tool included (socket 5/16") Hardware: Overall very good condition. The original tuning machines have been replaced with a set of Grover tuning machines. A set of older Grover tuning machines are included but the original Gibson tuners are not included. The fine tuning adjustment screw for the 1st E string has been replaced with a black one which remains functional. One corner of the jack plate has broken off but the output jack remains secure. Tremolo arm included. Structural: No concerns or issues to note. Height of the string from the 12th Fret-1.5mm - Bass 2mm Please be aware that the action on a guitar may move slightly in transit and this measurement is the current height. Strings on Guitar - 9-42 This guitar has been adjusted for a light pick action. If you use a heavier pick action, it may be necessary to raise the action to alleviate fret noise. Currently light fret noise is apparent in the upper register of the bass strings and very lightly along the 1st E string. Raising the action may alleviate this. Further Notes: It is worth mentioning that although this report details notable signs of age, the instrument remains in very good condition for 40 years old, with a patina that is often artificially emulated by modern manufacturers. Electrics: Fully functional. Case & Accessories: No case is provided with this guitar. Tremolo arm and spare tuning machines included. Truss rod tool not included.
