Greco FA-95 Gloss Natural 1991 Archtop Hollow-Body Acoustic
Here for sale we have a Greco FA-95 archtop acoustic guitar in Gloss Natural finish. Japanese manufacturer Greco is often referred to as one of the 'lawsuit' brands, which produced high-quality copies of popular American guitars, primarily during the 1970s. Greco were among the most highly regarded of the Japanese brands to engage in this, in fact selling their Stratocaster division to Fender Japan in the early '80s. The lawsuit era arguably forced the larger manufacturers to produce more affordable guitars to compete with the Japanese copies, resulting in the Epiphone & Squier brands. Eventually the pressure from American manufacturers became too much, and Greco moved towards manufacturing its own designs throughout the '80s & '90s. This FA-95 model was made in Japan in 1991, likely in the famous Fujigen factory. Clearly based on the Gibson ES-175, a set-neck construction is employed and comprises a Laminated Maple body, Mahogany neck and 20 fret Rosewood fingerboard. The headstock design, body shape, split parallelogram inlays and even the tailpiece all very closely resemble the ES-175. Nickel hardware is fitted including a T-O-M bridge & vintage-style tuning machines with 'Tulip' buttons are installed. This particular model features no pickups, although Greco did produce others with PAF-style humbuckers. The Mahogany neck plays exceptionally well. The profile is very comfortable, and could be described as a 'Soft C' shape which provides easy reach across the fretboard in all registers. This works in tandem with the 12" fingerboard radius to make jazzy chord voicings and smooth lines feel like a breezy and effortless affair. The single Florentine cutaway body design improves access to the upper register, meaning you can make use of all 20 frets. The shapely lines of the body feel great in the arms and with the arched top and back feel very comfortable in both standing and seated positions. The acoustic voice of the Greco FA-95 is beautifully refined and soft, working particularly well for jazz playing thanks to its rather dark, muted tone. There is of course a distinct archtop flavour to the sound, but with its Maple construction the FA-95 manages to retain a crisp, clean edge to its sound which will work well in a variety of settings. With no pickups installed, this is clearly an instrument designed for use as part of a small ensemble or as a tool for the studio. An extraordinarily well-made instrument which feels every inch as good as its American godfather. All at just a tiny fraction of the price. Luthier Report Our ID: 1270725120832 Weight: 5.94lbs Serial: K914217 Aesthetic Condition: Headstock: Overall very good condition. The top edge of the rear face displays mild indentation which has lightly chipped the lacquer finish, exposing the wood in some instances. This is most notable at the treble side edge. Light scratching to the front face is visible under direct light, as is common with high gloss finishes. Neck: Overall very good condition. The rear of the neck shows light to mild indentation, most notable behind the 5th fret where the finish is very lightly pierced. The fingerboard binding shows light to mild discoloration to both sides throughout the register. Any markings to the fingerboard are difficult to discern. Body: Overall very good condition. A screw hole is present to the rear near the neck joint where the strap button was previously fitted. The body presents various light to mild indentations, in places lightly piercing the finish. This is most notable at the bass side shoulder. The binding shows light to mild discoloration throughout, most notably around the cutaway. Light scratching to all aspects of the body is visible under direct light, as is common with high gloss finishes. This is most notable to the centre of the rear face and the pickguard, consistent with playwear. Condition of Frets: The frets demonstrate light signs of use, not affecting playability. Light denting and flattening of the frets is apparent to the early register. There is moderate material remaining for any fret work the new owner may wish to perform. Current Set Up: Truss Rod: fully functional. Truss rod tool (4mm hex) not included. Hardware: Very good condition with light tarnishing of the metal hardware. A removable piece of foam has been fitted below the pickguard by a previous owner to stop the pick guard hitting to the top of the body. Structural: No concerns or issues to note. Height of the string from the 12th Fret-1.75mm - Bass 2mm Please be aware that the action on a guitar may move slightly in transit and this measurement is the current height.
