Lowden O-10 Satin Natural 1993 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar

Here for sale we have a Lowden O-10 acoustic guitar in Satin Natural finish. George Lowden is a highly celebrated luthier from Northern Ireland, whose instruments can today be found in the hands of some the world's top musicians including Ed Sheeran, Damien Rice, David Gray and many others. George made his first guitar at the age of 10, and founded George Lowden Guitars in Bangor in 1974 at the age of just 22. Starting off with traditional A Frame bracing, George soon moved to his own modified A Frame bracing, and developed his signature Dolphin voicing profile which helped to define Lowden Guitars' distinct tonal character. Around 2003 the Newtownards factory that had been producing Lowdens became Avalon after the licence agreement with the Lowden Guitar Co. expired, whilst Lowden Guitars moved to Downpatrick in 2004 where it remains to this day. The 'O' designation of this guitar means it features the 'Original' Lowden body shape. This is the largest design Lowden produces, and is quite similar to a Jumbo with a large body and powerful sound. The soundhole label and serial number of the instrument indicate that it was manufactured around 1993, and therefore would have been produced under licence in the Newtownards factory. An all solid construction is employed, and comprises a Cedar top, Mahogany back and sides, Mahogany neck and 20 fret Ebony fingerboard. A Rosewood headplate with Mother of Pearl & Abalone inlaid logo adorn the headstock, matching the bridge which also appears to be Rosewood. The body is double bound, with purfling to the top and a traditional wooden rosette. A Bone saddle and nut are fitted, along with a set of Chrome sealed Lowden tuning machines with Amber buttons. The Mahogany neck plays beautifully, with a profile which could be described as a moderately-sized 'C' shape. This fills the hand for a substantial and confidence-inspiring grip whilst remaining slim enough for tricky chord voicings and articulate melodic playing. Certainly, the neck is practical for a wide range of playing styles and techniques; feeling well suited to chord playing, melodic lines and fingerpicking patterns alike. The Ebony of the fingerboard is nice and dark in appearance, and along with its supremely tight grain provides a smooth, durable and luxurious playing surface. The Jumbo body shape feels great in the arms, ensuring comfort in both standing and seated positions, whilst the cutaway opens up the full range of the instrument. The acoustic voice of the Lowden O-10 is rich and warm, and provides a surprising amount of balance for a jumbo-bodied acoustic. Lows are warm without being too soft, retaining plenty of accuracy. The midrange is tight and punchy, helping to easily cut through a mix when playing as part of an ensemble. The treble response is bright and shimmering, adding a sparkle to every note played on the instrument. One real standout feature of this instrument is the sheer amount of sustain it achieves, with notes and chords ringing out with beautiful crystalline clarity. The Mahogany back and sides add depth and richness to the sound, working in conjunction with the Jumbo body design to deliver a warm bass response and clear mid range. A fine example of why George Lowden’s work is so highly regarded.
