Oberheim DX Digital Drum Machine Circa 1986

Condition: Very good. This machine is from 1986 and it’s in very good condition for it’s age. There are some marks on the body but it’s remarkably clean for a 38 year old item. No box or manual included. The Oberheim DX drum machine is a classic piece of electronic music history, revered for its rich, punchy sounds and intuitive design. Introduced in the early 1980s, it features a rugged, rectangular chassis with a matte black finish and Oberheims classic blue stripes, accented by bold white lettering. The interface is clean and straightforward, with dedicated buttons for each drum sound, allowing for quick and easy programming. The DX is known for its unmistakable lo-fi yet warm sound, courtesy of its 8-bit digital samples stored on EPROM chips. This gives its drum hits—such as the kick, snare, hi-hats, toms, and iconic handclaps—a distinctive, crunchy character that has become synonymous with vintage hip-hop, synthpop, and electro tracks. These EPROMs are swappable, so you can create custom kits by simply swapping out the chips. The machine includes a built-in sequencer, capable of storing multiple patterns and songs. A bright LED display sits prominently at the top, displaying tempo, pattern numbers, and other key information. With MIDI connectivity (a rarity for its time), the DX can seamlessly integrate into modern and vintage setups alike. Overall, the Oberheim DX drum machine remains a sought-after relic of the early digital era, prized for its unique tonal qualities and historical significance in the evolution of electronic music production.
