TUNE Guitar Technology Somnus Zi II-6 Walnut Natural c.1990

This guitar is a commission sale - if you have a high end guitar you are interested in selling, please contact us via our easy to find website - search: Sell Us Your Guitar. Here for sale we have a rather rare boutique 6-string electric bass guitar from Japanese manufacturer TUNE Guitar Technologies. The company was founded in 1983 in Osaka, Japan, and began producing high-end guitars and basses, mainly for sale in the Japanese domestic market. A licensing agreement was made with a Korean company in the early '90s which made TUNE instruments available more widely, as well as more affordable. The original Japanese TUNE Guitar Technologies company collapsed due to financial pressures, resulting in a period of time where only the more affordable Korean-made instruments were available. The company resurfaced in Japan around the year 2000 as 'TUNE Guitar Maniac', and continues to manufacture small runs of guitars and basses as well as custom orders to this day. This particular example is a Somnus Zi II-6 in Natural finish. Made in Japan in the late '80s to early '90s, a thru-neck construction is employed, and comprises a 4-piece Maple neck, with what appears to be Ash wings which are overlaid to the front and rear with Walnut. A 24 fret Ebony fingerboard is topped with jumbo frets. Gold hardware is fitted, including a slanted 6-saddle fully-adjustable bridge, Brass nut and sealed tuning machines. A pair of 'TUNE Guitar Technology' humbucking pickups are installed, and are wired to an on-board TUNE ZIC-3 active preamp with controls for master volume, pickup balancer and low pass filter, along with internal mini controls for pick up gain and a 4-band EQ. The Maple neck plays very well, with a profile which might be described as a slim 'D' shape. This offers a slightly flattened area to the centre rear which encourages ergonomic thumb positioning across the register, facilitating fast accurate fretting for jazzy bass lines. Of course, with 6 strings the nut is rather wide at 2.32". To manage this, the profile is nice and slim with soft shoulders, making the neck feel much more comfortable than the nut width suggests. The neck-thru construction works in conjunction with the generous double-cutaway body design to enhance access to the top frets, opening up the full range of the instrument. The body is contoured for comfort, and the main controls are easily accessible whilst playing. The pair of TUNE Guitar Technology humbucking pickups installed in this instrument deliver thick, deep and rich tones which will fill out the low end of any mix with ease. Silky smooth sounds from the middle pickup contract nicely with the brightness and aggression of the bridge, and with the notched blend control you can easily fine tune your sound between these two great tones. Between the external and internal controls, the TUNE ZIC-3 on-board active preamp delivers a seriously versatile range of sounds that will work in a wide range of styles and musical settings. With such an extensive range, ergonomic design and comprehensive electronic controls, this bass is perfect for the working musician who needs their bass to keep up with their creativity.
