Aria Pro II PE-175 – Rare, 1977 - Pre-Herb Ellis Prototype
A truly rare opportunity to own a remarkable piece of Japanese guitar history, this 1977 Aria Pro II PE-175 is a pre-production/export prototype that predates the official Herb Ellis model, released in 1978. Built during the peak of Japan’s famed "lawsuit-era," this early model was produced in extremely limited numbers, estimated at fewer than 50 units worldwide, between a 6 month period from late 1977 to early 1978. These guitars were likely crafted as high-quality dealer samples and export prototypes ahead of the full-scale PE-175/Herb Ellis release. Featuring an ‘open-book’ headstock, no Herb Ellis inlay at the 19th fret, and exceptional build quality, this guitar is highly desirable to both collectors and stage-ready jazz players. Key Features: Model: PE-175 (prototype/export version of the ‘Herb Ellis’ full production model) Year: Circa 1977 (pre-official Herb Ellis release) Origin: Matsumoku Factory, Japan Headstock: Rare “open-book” design with multi-ply binding (seen only on earliest models) Fretboard: Ebony with split parallelogram inlays — no “Herb Ellis” 19th fret inlay Pickups: 2xoriginal AL-7 humbuckers – smooth, articulate, and ideal for classic jazz voicing and lead lines Finish: Vintage sunburst with beautiful natural aging/patina Body: Laminated figured maple top, back, and sides with Venetian cutaway Neck: Mahogany set neck, gentle ‘C’ profile Scale Length: 24.75" (628mm) Nut Width: 1 11/16" Body Depth: 3.5" Lower Bout Width: 17" Bridge: Tune-o-matic with floating rosewood base Tailpiece: Trapeze Controls: 2 Volume, 2 Tone, 3-way selector switch with witch-hat knobs Tuners: sealed tuners Binding: Multi-ply body, neck, headstock; bound f-holes Hand-built at the legendary Matsumoku factory, this pre production PE-175 delivers a warm, rounded jazz tone with excellent clarity and dynamic response. The AL-7 pickups offer a smooth midrange voice, ideal for chord melody, comping, and solo lines with clean articulation. Reinforcement beneath the soundboard helps improve sustain and feedback resistance, a perfect setup for both stage and studio use. Currently strung with Thomastik Bebop round wounds (.011–.047) and set up with moderate relief for optimal playability. The action can easily be adjusted to taste with the floating bridge. This guitar is in 100% original condition with no structural issues or repairs. The original frets show minimal wear and remain in excellent playing condition, with the ebony fingerboard is clean and well preserved. The electronics are fully functional, delivering warm, articulate tone. As expected for a vintage instrument, the gold hardware shows light tarnish and a gentle natural patina, adding to its authentic character and vintage appeal. Original deluxe arched plush-lined hard-shell fitted case (all latches functional and new case handle) Please review all photos carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
